Three laps remaining in Sunday’s Formula One Grand Prix in Azerbaijan, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the leader of the championship, went down while trying to win.
Verstappen appeared to have suffered a puncture or tyre failure, although he was unharmed in the collision. After the collision, Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez, a Mexican, took the lead, followed by Mercedes’s seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton and Aston Martin’s Sebastian Vettel.
At the resumption, the drama persisted. With overheated brakes, Hamilton continued straight through Turn 1, allowing Perez to win his first race for Red Bull and his second in the Formula One World Championship.
Vettel came in second, and Pierre Gasly, the winner of the Italian Grand Prix the year before, did a fantastic job holding off Charles Leclerc to come in third.
