On Wednesday afternoon, reigning World Series champion Max Scherzer appeared on Foul Territory and dismissed any trade rumors concerning the three-time Cy Young Award winner.
Scherzer’s response came after A.J Pierzynski asked if he would consider waiving his no-trade clause again, similar to his experience with the New York Mets, for a potential third trade. Scherzer’s reply was definitive: he believes in the Rangers’ prospects and has no interest in leaving.
Previously traded twice in the last three seasons, Scherzer is evidently content with his current team, donning the blue, red, and white.
Max Scherzer will not waive his no-trade clause to leave the Rangers
The Rangers are Scherzer’s sixth team, having been selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks as the 11th overall pick in 2006. He made his major league debut in 2008 and was traded to the Detroit Tigers in 2009, where he won his first Cy Young Award in 2014.
He joined the Washington Nationals in 2015, making five consecutive National League All-Star teams from 2015 to 2019 and earning back-to-back Cy Young Awards in 2016 and 2017. Scherzer also won his first World Series title with the Nationals in 2019. Before the Rangers, he played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets.
Looking ahead
The Rangers have enjoyed significant success with Scherzer in their pitching rotation, including securing a sweep in his first start against the Chicago White Sox. The St. Louis, Mo. native missed part of this season due to a nerve issue related to back surgery but was recently activated from the injured list and has since made four starts with a 3.09 ERA and a 1-2 record.
With 44 wins this season, the Rangers currently sit third in the American League West, with 20 wins at Globe Life Stadium.
Regardless of how the rest of the season unfolds, Scherzer has made it clear he plans to stay with the Rangers.
