In a heartfelt tribute to the lives lost and affected by the tragic events of March 21, 2005, the Red Lake community has embarked on a series of initiatives to honor

the 20th anniversary of Minnesota’s deadliest school shooting. This somber milestone has galvanized survivors, educators, and residents to come together in remembrance and healing.

On that fateful day two decades ago, a 16-year-old student opened fire at Red Lake High School, resulting in the deaths of ten individuals, including himself, his grandfather,

a teacher, a security guard, and five classmates. The incident left more than half a dozen others seriously injured and remains a poignant chapter in the community’s history.

In the weeks leading up to the anniversary, former teacher Missy Dodds and survivor Starr Jourdain collaborated to design and distribute commemorative shirts and hoodies.

The apparel features symbolic imagery and the date “3.21.05,” serving as a tangible reminder of the lives impacted by the tragedy.

Proceeds from these sales are dedicated to funding a permanent memorial at the high school, a testament to the community’s commitment to remembrance and healing.

The proposed memorial, envisioned to be constructed from reflective black granite, aims to provide a serene space for reflection and honor the memories of those lost. Its design mirrors the existing veterans’ memorial nearby, symbolizing resilience and respect.

Organizers believe that establishing this permanent fixture is a crucial step in acknowledging the past and fostering collective healing.

On March 21, 2025, a day of remembrance was held at Red Lake High School, drawing survivors, families, first responders, and community members. The ceremony featured heartfelt speeches, moments of silence, and the sharing of personal stories, underscoring the enduring impact of the tragedy and the strength of the Red Lake community.

The anniversary also prompted reflections on the journey of healing over the past two decades. Community members emphasized the importance of support systems, counseling, and open dialogues in navigating the aftermath of such events. The initiatives undertaken serve not only as a tribute to those lost but also as a beacon of hope and resilience for future generations.

As the Red Lake community continues to heal, the establishment of the memorial stands as a testament to their unwavering spirit and commitment to honoring their history. Through collective efforts and remembrance, they strive to ensure that the lessons learned and the memories of those affected remain an integral part of their community’s fabric.
