Jordan Morris blamed for breaking FC Dallas’ hearts due to late goals
In Saturday’s match against FC Dallas, Jordan Morris broke away to score his second goal in as many minutes and steal three vital points for the Seattle Sounders. The Lumen Field audience went into a frenzy as Morris then dashed to the left side of the Brougham End, close to the locker room tunnels, with teammates joyfully running after him.
Morris’ celebration against FC Dallas on Saturday after his winner in stoppage time seemed recognizable, it most definitely did. That was something he later admitted.
Morris scored the game-winning goal in extra time against FC Dallas during the first round of the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs, nearly five years ago. Morris led Seattle to its second MLS Cup championship in four years with a hat trick, the first in Sounders postseason history. Morris dashed to the same spot on the field, leaving FC Dallas scratching its head at how it let another chance slide through its fingers.
Even though the stakes weren’t quite as high on Saturday, the points were still crucial for a club that hasn’t always been able to get going this season.
It truly comes down to a major result, according to Morris. “I’m glad to see my name on the scoreboard, but we needed that win.”
With his 60 career goals, Morris eclipsed Sounders MLS stalwart and original Fredy Montero for second place on the team’s all-time regular-season goalscoring list. The brace also marked a significant milestone for Morris. To date, only Raúl Ruidíaz, a colleague, has scored more.
It means everything, Morris remarked. Maintaining my position atop the [club goalscoring] list was one of my main objectives. I believe that my ability to score goals and be a threat will benefit the team. It means a lot to me to see my name listed with legends like Fredy, Raúl, and other greats who have performed for this club. It’s about my teammates and my team and what they’ve accomplished, but it also confirms a ton of the hard work that I’ve done to help me get there.”
Head coach Brian Schmetzer continued, saying, “That’s a great milestone.” Jordan has a lengthy history. He’s performed admirably for the team, the hometown boy. I’m glad for him.
Morris and the Sounders are aware of their ongoing tasks. Despite the outcome, they finished the weekend outside of the postseason picture, trailing the Vancouver Whitecaps in the tiebreaker despite being tied on points.
This vital three-game homestand between Seattle and the Chicago Fire on Saturday (7:30 p.m. PT; MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, 93.3 KJR FM, El Rey 1360AM | TICKETS) and the New England Revolution on July 6 is down to two more games. In the Eastern Conference, the Fire and Revs are both positioned below the postseason cutline.
In the previous week, the Sounders have overcome two 2-0 deficits twice. On Wednesday, they overcame a 2-2 tie against the Houston Dynamo before pulling off an incredible 3-2 victory over FC Dallas on Saturday. The Colorado Rapids, in fourth place, and the Sounders, in tenth place, are separated by just six points in the Western Conference standings. A few more victories might propel Seattle farther up the rankings.
Morris stated, “After the game, Christian [Roldan] said that this is going to change our season.” “We just now have a belief…Since we are confident in our ability to contend for a trophy, we set out to raise the bar in the second half of the season. It demonstrates that the gang never gives up and that everyone sticks together.
