The Green Bay Packers are solid at quarterback with Jordan Love, but they face a major concern with their backup options.
Love has shown he’s capable of leading the team, having had a standout first full season as a starter and guiding the Packers to a playoff win over the Cowboys. Despite only one full season, he received a substantial four-year extension to stay in Green Bay.
The issue now is the lack of experience behind Love. The Packers recently cut Jacob Eason, who had limited NFL experience with just two games and one completed pass. His release doesn’t address the need for a reliable backup. With the season potentially starting soon, the Packers would rely on either Sean Clifford or Michael Pratt as Love’s backup.
Clifford, a fifth-round pick from Penn State in 2023, has only one completed pass in the NFL, which isn’t reassuring for a team aiming for success. Pratt, a seventh-round pick from Tulane in 2024, is even less seasoned.
The Packers should consider acquiring a more experienced backup quarterback, either through a trade or by signing a free agent like Ryan Tannehill. While no backup can fully replace Love, having a more seasoned option would greatly enhance their chances if Love were to get injured. Releasing Eason was a step towards clearing space, but bringing in a proven backup is essential for the team’s depth.
