Former West Virginia head football coach Neal Brown has issued a heartfelt statement following the announcement that he will not return for a seventh season with the Mountaineers.

The decision, made public on December 1, 2024, also confirmed that Brown will not coach the team in their upcoming bowl game. Offensive coordinator Chad Scott will serve as in terim head coach.

In a message shared via his X account, Brown expressed pride in his six-year tenure and gratitude for his players, staff, and the West Virginia community.

“It has been a great honor to serve as West Virginia’s Head Football Coach. I am extremely proud to be associated with all the incredible young men who were part of our program over the last six years. This team, like those before them, showed up every day, resilient, united, and determined,” Brown wrote.

Brown also addressed the loyal Mountaineer fan base, emphasizing his belief that the program is positioned to thrive under Athletic Director Wren Baker’s leadership. “With Wren’s leadership, and the foundation we worked so hard to create, I know the program is poised to embrace the challenges of today’s ever-changing football climate and make the investments necessary to advance.”

Thanking his staff, Brown highlighted the dedication of his team members and their families, stating, “You gave your all and Brooke and I will always be here for you.”

He concluded his statement with words of encouragement for his former players, urging them to remain focused and to win their upcoming bowl game.

Brown’s tenure at WVU ends with a 37-35 record, spanning six seasons. Though his time in Morgantown was marked by ups and downs, Brown remains optimistic about the future of the program he helped build.
