Florida State is expected to target multiple positions in the NCAA Transfer Portal this December, with quarterback being a primary focus. The Seminoles’ struggles at the position have been evident throughout the 2024 season. After the addition of transfer quarterback DJ Uiagalelei, expectations were high, but his performance fell short. Uiagalelei, who started five games, completed just 53.8% of his passes. Unfortunately, both redshirt freshman Brock Glenn (43.2%) and true freshman Luke Kromenhoek (44.4%) have performed even worse, combining for only four touchdown passes and seven interceptions over the last five games.
With no clear starter emerging, Florida State may look to the transfer portal for a more proven quarterback. The Seminoles are projected to have only two scholarships allocated to the position for the 2025 season, following the decommitment of four-star quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. Furthermore, there’s a possibility that Glenn or Kromenhoek could transfer if they fail to secure the starting role moving forward.
Head coach Mike Norvell is likely to consult with his new offensive coordinator to make the best decision for the program. Early reports suggest that one potential transfer target is Thomas Castellanos, a junior quarterback from Boston College, who is expected to enter the portal. Castellanos was absent from the Eagles’ recent game against SMU, and head coach Bill O’Brien confirmed he would not be traveling with the team. Despite missing time this season due to injury, Castellanos has posted a career-high 61.5% completion rate, with 18 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Though his performance has been somewhat inconsistent, Castellanos is a dynamic playmaker who rushed for 194 yards and one touchdown this year. Last season, he rushed for 1,113 yards and 13 touchdowns. He previously became the first player in Boston College history to surpass both 2,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in a single season.
Castellanos, a Georgia native, is familiar to Florida State, having received an offer from the Seminoles in 2022 before ultimately committing to UCF. After transferring to Boston College, he has continued to develop, completing 297 of 507 passes (58.6%) for 3,689 yards and 33 touchdowns in his three seasons at the collegiate level. He has also rushed 322 times for 1,427 yards and 15 touchdowns.
While Glenn and Kromenhoek may still represent the future of the quarterback position at Florida State, the Seminoles may opt for another experienced signal-caller to provide stability in 2025.
