Pittsburgh (AP) — Both shortstop Oneil Cruz and designated hitter Andrew McCutchen of the Pittsburgh Pirates were hurt while running the bases on Friday night against the Seattle Mariners, and they were taken out of the game in the seventh inning.
With one out, McCutchen singled to left field and was hobbling as he got to first base. McCutchen, who increased his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games, was replaced at pinch running by Ji Hwan Bae.
Oneil Cruz fell as he reached second base after hitting a two-run double to right field two batters later. He was replaced as a pinch runner by Jared Triolo.
Cruz was diagnosed with left ankle soreness, and McCutchen with left knee pain.
As the Pirates looked to snap a 10-game losing run, Cruz’s double gave them a 5-2 lead.
