West Virginia head coach Darian DeVries celebrated his team’s monumental upset over No. 7 Kansas to kick off Big 12 play on Tuesday.
The Mountaineers secured a rare road victory in Lawrence, a feat DeVries recognized as a significant milestone.
“Anytime you can get a road win in this league, it’s a big deal,” he said.
“Winning here feels even bigger because you know you’re one-up on everybody.”
Despite the historic win, DeVries is adamant about keeping his team grounded. He reminded his players that success in the Big 12 comes down to consistency and resilience.
“We told the team it’s only like one team a year that typically comes here and wins,” he explained. “Our mindset was to be that team, but now the focus is on what’s next.”
West Virginia now looks to build on the momentum from this victory as they prepare for the challenges ahead in one of the toughest conferences in the country.
With a disciplined approach and an emphasis on staying present, DeVries hopes his team can continue to surprise opponents and establish themselves as a contender.
