Detroit, MI – December 29, 2024 – The Detroit Red Wings have announced the firing of head coach Derek Lalonde after a challenging start to the 2024-2025 season. In a bold move to revitalize the team, the organization has named Todd McLellan as the new head coach, effective immediately.
Lalonde, who was hired in 2022, struggled to bring the Red Wings back into playoff contention. Despite showing promise in his first season, the team’s inconsistent performance, especially during critical moments in the 2024 season, led to his departure.
The Red Wings, once a powerhouse in the NHL, have been in a rebuilding phase in recent years, and the search for a new direction has been a priority for general manager Steve Yzerman.
“We appreciate everything Derek has done for the team over the last two seasons,” said Yzerman. “However, we believe it is time for a change to push the organization forward. Todd McLellan’s experience and leadership qualities make him the right person to lead the Red Wings at this critical juncture.”
Todd McLellan, who previously coached the Los Angeles Kings, has a wealth of experience in the NHL. McLellan brings over 15 years of head coaching experience, including stints with the San Jose Sharks and Edmonton Oilers. Under his leadership, the Kings have shown significant improvement, making the playoffs consistently in recent years.
His tactical acumen and ability to develop young talent will be vital in guiding Detroit’s promising roster.
“I am excited to join such a storied franchise with a passionate fanbase,” McLellan said. “There’s a lot of potential in this group, and I’m looking forward to helping these players develop and ultimately bring the Red Wings back to championship contention.”
McLellan will have a challenging task ahead, as the Red Wings aim to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
With a roster that includes rising stars like Lucas Raymond and Moritz Seider, as well as seasoned veterans such as Dylan Larkin, the Red Wings hope McLellan’s experience can propel them back into the postseason.
The Red Wings will face off against the Montreal Canadiens at Little Caesars Arena on January 2, 2025, where McLellan is expected to make his debut as head coach.
As the team enters a new chapter under McLellan, fans and analysts alike will be closely watching how the Red Wings respond to this leadership change and whether McLellan can deliver the success the franchise desperately seeks.
