— Coco Gauff did not anticipate becoming a Grand Slam champion in singles and doubles so quickly. The 20-year-old American teamed up with Katerina Siniakova to win the French Open trophy on Sunday, marking her maiden major doubles victory. After Gauff won the U.S. Open singles last year, they defeated Italians Jasmine Paolini and Sara Errani 7-6 (5), 6-3, to award Gauff her second major. Reflecting on her doubles victory, Gauff stated, “I think it’s just one of those things that when you least expect it to happen, it happens.”
After finishing second in title matches at Roland Garros in 2022 and the US Open in 2021, Gauff eventually prevailed in her third women’s doubles final. “After I lost the first two (doubles) finals, I thought, well, okay, I reached that point, maybe I should focus on singles,” Gauff explained. “The US Open is the same. I had no expectation of winning when I did. It was a terrible year for me. I didn’t really anticipate playing when I got here. I find it amusing how those lessons are imparted by life.”
