Ryne Sandberg Announces Relapse of Prostate Cancer
Hall of Fame second baseman Ryne Sandberg, a Chicago Cubs legend, revealed on Tuesday that his prostate cancer has relapsed and metastasized to other organs. The 65-year-old shared the update in an Instagram post, where he also expressed his determination to continue fighting the disease.
“We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this,” Sandberg wrote. “Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for me and my family.”
Sandberg first disclosed his battle with metastatic prostate cancer in January. Since then, he has kept fans and supporters updated through social media, celebrating key milestones, including being declared cancer-free earlier this year.
In June, the Cubs honored Sandberg with a statue outside Wrigley Field. During the ceremony, Sandberg spoke about how much the tribute meant to him, particularly after his cancer diagnosis. By May, he had shared encouraging news that scans showed no signs of cancer, and in August, he marked the end of his treatment by ringing the ceremonial bell—a symbol of being cancer-free.
Tuesday’s news was met with an outpouring of support, including a statement from Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts, who called Sandberg “an inspiration to cancer survivors everywhere.”
“I know all Cubs fans join my family and me in sending positive thoughts to Ryne and keeping him and his family in our prayers as he faces this next round of treatments to defeat cancer,” Ricketts said. “Ryne has the heart and soul of a champion, and that will serve him well in this challenge.”
Sandberg’s illustrious playing career is marked by numerous accolades. A 10-time All-Star, he earned nine Gold Gloves, seven Silver Sluggers, and the 1984 National League MVP Award. His legacy as one of baseball’s greatest second basemen was cemented with his induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2005.
As Sandberg faces more intensive treatment, the baseball world and fans everywhere are rallying behind him, offering thoughts, prayers, and unwavering support for one of the game’s most beloved figures.
