Chad Scott to Return to West Virginia University Football Program in 2025

West Virginia University (WVU) announced today that Chad Scott will rejoin the Mountaineers football program for the 2025 season. Scott, 50, has been a key figure in WVU’s coaching staff for the past six years, working under former head coach Neal Brown.

Newly appointed head coach Rich Rodriguez expressed enthusiasm about retaining Scott:
“I have an appreciation and respect for the job that Chad has done here at West Virginia,” Rodriguez said in a press release. “He brings a high level of energy and has a history of building relationships and developing players. I look forward to having him as a member of our staff.”

During his time at WVU, Scott has made significant contributions, particularly in leading the team’s running game. He has served in multiple roles, including offensive coordinator for the 2023-24 season, co-offensive coordinator for three seasons, and run-game coordinator in 2022.

Under Scott’s guidance, the Mountaineers’ rushing offense has achieved national recognition. In 2024, the team ranked ninth among Power Five schools, with running backs Jahiem White, CJ Donaldson, and quarterback Garrett Greene each rushing for more than 600 yards—a feat matched by only one other FBS backfield. The offense surpassed 140 rushing yards in 11 games and eclipsed 200 yards in six matchups, including four of the last six games.

In 2023, WVU recorded 2,976 rushing yards, leading all Power Five programs. The Mountaineers also topped the Big 12 Conference in rushing yards per game (245.67) and tied for first in rushing touchdowns (24).

Scott’s impact has been evident throughout his tenure. In 2022, the running game averaged 171.5 yards per game, with four running backs collectively accounting for 1,793 yards and 18 touchdowns. Earlier, in 2021, running back Leddie Brown notched his second consecutive 1,000-yard season with 14 offensive touchdowns. In 2020, the Mountaineers saw the nation’s most improved offense, adding over 60 rushing yards, 90 total yards, and nearly seven points per game compared to the previous year.

Before WVU, Scott held coaching positions at North Carolina (2016-18), Kentucky (2013-14), Texas Tech (2010-12), and Troy (2007-09). Notably, his offenses consistently demonstrated depth and productivity. At North Carolina, the 2018 offense ranked 31st nationally, averaging 442.1 yards per game. During his time at Texas Tech, his running backs averaged 5.0 yards per carry and contributed 52 touchdowns over three seasons. At Troy, Scott helped lead the Trojans to three Sun Belt Conference Championships and two New Orleans Bowl appearances.

A native of Plant City, Florida, Scott was a standout collegiate athlete. After starting his playing career at Kentucky, he transferred to North Carolina, where he earned first-team All-ACC honors in 2005. As a senior, Scott rushed for 796 yards and eight touchdowns, highlighted by a 175-yard, two-touchdown performance in a victory over No. 4 Miami.

Following his college career, Scott spent time in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers before returning to North Carolina as a graduate assistant.

Scott’s extensive experience, on-field success, and commitment to player development position him as a vital component of the Mountaineers’ future under Rodriguez’s leadership.
