The Lionesses defeated the Republic of Ireland 2-1 in Norwich to move one step closer to qualifying, but they gave away late goals and squandered opportunities.
Sarina Wiegman, the manager, claimed that parts of the play were “sloppy”.
Although England dominated over extended stretches, Russo, the striker, is aware that by Tuesday, they must improve if they are to overcome Sweden, who trail Wiegman’s squad by three points.
Russo said to BBC Radio 5 Live, “We will always be critical of ourselves for [not scoring more goals].”
“We have great expectations for ourselves and would like to forget about some significant opportunities we had.
“But we will get recovered and rested and hopefully put that right on Tuesday.”
Despite winning, Gilly Flaherty, a former England defender, called the home team’s performance at Carrow Road “disappointing”.
“They had so many chances but couldn’t take enough of them,” remarked Flaherty.
“The final score would lead someone who hadn’t watched the game tonight to believe that it was extremely close.
“However, England had so many excellent opportunities and controlled for the most part. In these circumstances, they must learn to be clinical and brutal.”
