Panic spread across the decks of the luxury cruise ship Marella Explorer today after a complete power failure left the vessel stranded in open waters without propulsion, communication, or air conditioning.
The ship was en route from Sicily to Dubrovnik when, at approximately 11:45 AM local time, all onboard systems abruptly shut down. Passengers reported loud mechanical noises followed by a blackout that lasted for hours.
“We lost all power. No lights, no engines, no air — and no updates. People were crying, some started to faint,” said passenger Rachel Morris, traveling with her family. “It was like being trapped in a floating prison.”
Without propulsion or stabilizers, the vessel began drifting in high winds and moderate swells. Crew members struggled to maintain calm as food service, restrooms, and medical support were impacted. Backup systems reportedly failed to respond.
Rescue operations were launched by the Italian Coast Guard after distress signals were manually activated. Tugboats and helicopters have been dispatched to reach the disabled ship, which is currently floating about 90 kilometers off the Calabrian coast.
There are over 1,900 passengers and crew aboard. No injuries or fatalities have been reported yet, but tensions are rising.
Marella Cruises has not released a full statement but confirmed an “unexpected technical crisis” onboard. Experts say this kind of total systems failure is “extremely rare and deeply concerning.”
