The Boston Red Sox have acquired catcher Danny Jansen from the Toronto Blue Jays, sending prospects Cutter Coffey, Eddinson Paulino, and Gilberto Batista to Toronto, according to The Athletic’s Jen McCaffrey.
Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was the first to report that the two teams were negotiating a deal for Jansen.
Jansen, who has spent his entire seven-year career with the Blue Jays, is having a down year with a .212 average, six home runs, and 18 RBI. This follows a 2023 season where he hit .228 with 17 homers and 53 RBI in 86 games.
Joining the Red Sox, Jansen will aim to improve his performance and address Boston’s need for a right-handed hitter as they gear up for the postseason. The addition of Jansen will enable the Red Sox to feature a lineup with a mix of left-handed and right-handed hitters, potentially complicating things for opposing pitchers.
The Red Sox may still make additional moves before the trade deadline, as they are reportedly interested in bolstering their bullpen with another pitcher. Currently, Boston is in third place in the AL East with a record of 55-47 and hopes Jansen’s addition will further enhance their performance.
