According to Soccernet.ng, AFC Ajax is prepared to approve Chuba Akpom’s sale this summer as the Dutch powerhouses want to restructure their offensive line in time for the 2024–2025 campaign.
After a stellar season at Middlesbrough, Akpom signed a €12 million contract with Ajax last year, but the team had a dismal season and he found it difficult to make an impression.
Francesco Farioli, a former manager of OGC Nice, has been brought in to give the team a fresh look ahead of the challenge next season.
Wout Weghorst, a Netherlands international who plays for Burnley until 2025, is supposedly the guy the Italian strategist has chosen to spearhead Ajax’s assault in the upcoming campaign.
However, the team must approve Akpom’s exit before Ajax can pursue Weghorst, who was on loan at Manchester United in 2023 and failed to score in 17 league appearances.
Voetbal Headliner claims that Ajax consider it “particularly necessary” to allow the Nigerian forward to depart Amsterdam in order to create space in the roster for the former Wolfsburg striker.
It’s interesting that, despite having 129 goals in his career, Akpom has not drawn much attention from other teams, which makes it hard for Ajax to finish that chapter.
Conversely, Weghorst is being pursued by Italian teams, such as Trabzonspor, but the 31-year-old is leaning more toward joining Ajax.
In his first season, Akpom scored 15 goals for Ajax in all competitions, 11 of which came in just eight Eredivisie starts.
