The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is currently undergoing significant changes that may impact various academic programs and faculty positions. In September 2024, USM
administrators announced plans to review and potentially cut under-enrolled programs as a strategy to allocate funds for future faculty and staff pay raises. This decision aims to balance
the university’s budget amid decreasing revenue and increasing costs, ensuring sustainable growth and competitive salaries.
The proposed cuts have sparked concern among faculty members. In October 2024, the faculty senate voted no-confidence in the program review process, expressing
apprehension about the lack of faculty involvement and the potential impact on the university’s academic integrity. Programs identified for possible elimination or consolidation include bachelor’s degrees in
philosophy and criminal justice, as well as graduate programs in public relations and mathematics.
Despite these challenges, USM’s administration emphasizes that the program review is part of an ongoing effort to enhance program performance and identify efficiencies. The
university completed Phase I of its 2024-25 Program Inventory Review in December 2024, with plans to continue evaluating academic offerings to better align with student demand and state needs.
These developments indicate a period of transition for USM, with the potential for significant changes to its academic landscape.
Students, faculty, and stakeholders are advised to stay informed and engaged as the university navigates these adjustments.
