The Michigan Wolverines are entering a new era under head coach Kyle Whittingham, but questions are already emerging about his ability to develop elite quarterbacks—particularly rising star Bryce Underwood. The discussion gained traction after analysts highlighted Whittingham’s history at Utah Utes, where no quarterback was selected in the National Football League Draft during his 21-year tenure.
Whittingham arrived in Ann Arbor following the dismissal of former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore in December. One of his first priorities was meeting Underwood, the Wolverines’ highly touted young quarterback. The coach reportedly convinced the signal-caller to remain with the program and honor a multi-year agreement valued at up to $12 million, ensuring Michigan retained one of the most promising prospects in college football.
Despite the program’s optimism, analysts have raised concerns about whether Whittingham’s coaching track record aligns with Underwood’s long-term development. Dave Biddle drew attention to the statistic on social media, noting that no quarterbacks from Utah were drafted during Whittingham’s time leading the program. The remark sparked debate about whether the veteran coach can help maximize the potential of a quarterback widely viewed as one of the sport’s most talented young players.
Underwood, a former five-star recruit, delivered a solid debut season as Michigan’s starting quarterback. He guided the Wolverines to a 9–4 record while completing 60.3 percent of his passes for 2,428 yards. The freshman accounted for 11 passing touchdowns and nine interceptions, while also contributing on the ground with 392 rushing yards and six scores on 88 carries.
Whittingham has acknowledged that Underwood faced developmental challenges during his first season as a starter. Speaking earlier this year on the Triple Option Podcast, the coach suggested that a lack of consistent quarterback-specific coaching played a role in the young player’s uneven progression throughout the year.
To address those concerns, Whittingham has reshaped the Wolverines’ offensive staff. He added quarterbacks coach Koy Detmer and offensive coordinator Jason Beck to help refine Underwood’s mechanics, fundamentals, and decision-making. According to Whittingham, the focus is on improving the quarterback’s throwing technique and polishing his overall consistency.
Underwood has also sought additional guidance outside the program. The young quarterback has begun working with renowned private coach Jordan Palmer, who has previously trained several NFL stars, including Patrick Mahomes, Trevor Lawrence, and Josh Allen. With new coaching resources and a full offseason to develop, Michigan hopes its prized quarterback can take a significant step forward next season.
