While much of the offseason focus surrounding the Milwaukee Brewers has centered on potential departures, the team still has plenty to build on after a strong 93-win season in 2024. As the Brewers look to bolster their roster, adding depth to the pitching staff should be a priority. While Milwaukee may not target top-tier free agents like Corbin Burnes or Max Fried, there are opportunities to make strategic, cost-effective additions with upside.
One intriguing option is future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer. Over the past 17 years, Scherzer has established himself as one of the premier pitchers in baseball, earning eight All-Star selections and three Cy Young Awards. At 40 years old, Scherzer is nearing the end of his illustrious career, but he could still provide significant value to the Brewers on a one-year deal.
Projected to receive around $15 million this winter, Scherzer could fit into Milwaukee’s budget. Although he battled injuries in 2024, posting a 3.95 ERA across nine starts, he demonstrated he can still be effective. In 2023, he finished with a solid 3.77 ERA over 27 starts. If healthy, Scherzer could help stabilize the Brewers’ rotation and add a veteran presence to a relatively young roster.
For a team with postseason aspirations in 2025, Scherzer could be a key addition that puts them over the top, providing high-level pitching without breaking the bank. A one-year deal could be a mutually beneficial arrangement, offering Scherzer a chance to prove himself while giving the Brewers a veteran ace to help lead their playoff push.
