The Philadelphia Phillies were unable to parlay their strong regular season performance into postseason success in 2024, but they could look to make a bold move in the offseason to position themselves for a deeper playoff run in 2025. One potential target for the Phillies is Chicago White Sox left-handed starter Garrett Crochet, with reports suggesting the team may be willing to part with multiple prospects to acquire him.
FanSided’s Edward Eng proposed a trade scenario in which the Phillies would send shortstop Aiden Miller, catcher Eduardo Tait, and right-handed pitcher Seth Johnson to Chicago in exchange for Crochet.
“Given the significant package the Phillies would need to offer, they would likely expect a proven No. 1 starter in return,” Eng wrote. “However, while Crochet has tremendous upside, his long-term success remains uncertain, making him a high-risk, high-reward acquisition.”
Miller, the Phillies’ top prospect, Tait (No. 5) and Johnson (No. 15) are all highly regarded by MLB Pipeline. In fact, USA Today’s Bob Nightengale recently reported that the Phillies are among the teams aggressively pursuing Crochet this offseason. A trade involving three top-30 prospects would certainly be a bold move for Philadelphia.
Eng noted that Miller made significant strides in 2024, advancing through three levels to reach Double-A, and was named the Phillies’ hottest-hitting prospect by Pipeline. Tait also impressed, posting a .302 average with 11 home runs and 73 RBIs in just 79 games. Given their development, Miller, in particular, could be considered close to untouchable in trade discussions.
For the Phillies, adding Crochet to a rotation that already includes Zach Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Cristopher Sánchez, and Ranger Suárez would further bolster their pitching staff. Crochet, who was named an All-Star in his first year as a starter in 2024, is projected by Spotrac to sign a six-year, $160 million deal upon reaching free agency after the 2026 season. With club control remaining and his potential as a top-of-the-rotation arm, the White Sox could command a significant return for the young left-hander.
