Two Texas Rangers likely returning next year but may not deserve it
RHP Jon Gray
Gray’s prime years seem to be behind him. He signed a four-year contract with Texas in 2021 after starting his career with the Colorado Rockies. Although he had a 4.16 ERA in his first three seasons with the Rangers, his struggles in 2024 indicate a downward trend.
This year, the 32-year-old posted a 4.47 ERA over 102.2 innings and his season ended early due to a groin injury. He ranked in the 30th percentile for Barrel% and the 41st percentile for GB%.
With an average fastball around 95 MPH and primarily relying on two pitches, questions arise about his ability to compete as he ages.
While it would be unfair to judge Gray solely on his 2024 performance, he hasn’t had an ERA below 3.70 since 2017. He’s a capable starter, but might fit better with another team since Texas has younger pitchers they want to develop.
RHP Tyler Mahle
Teams often take risks in the offseason, and the Rangers did so by signing Mahle to a two-year deal last December.
The 30-year-old made only three starts with Texas in 2024 and hasn’t exceeded ten starts since 2022. He missed the start of the 2024 season due to recovery from Tommy John surgery.
Additionally, he made only three appearances before being sidelined with shoulder stiffness. The California native didn’t have a significant impact when he played, and while Texas may have expected him to regain form, it could be prudent to trade him for players with a healthier injury record.
