Chicago Cubs-Mets completes $32 Million trade deal for offense

The Chicago Cubs in 2024 were eager for a powerful hitter in the middle of their lineup who could intimidate rival teams—something they’ve lacked for quite some time. Following four straight seasons without playoff appearances, the need for more offensive strength isn’t a new issue for the 2024 Cubs, who matched the same 83-79 record as the 2023 team. As winter approaches and star players become available, one standout everyone wants is Yankees superstar outfielder Juan Soto.

Soto is often considered the top hitter in baseball, still in his mid-20s, and consistently demonstrates his ability to perform in clutch postseason moments. His recent pivotal playoff performance, a three-run homer in extra innings that propelled New York to their first World Series since 2009, might compel Yankees ownership to offer him a substantial contract. If that happens, Chicago, which likely wouldn’t have pursued him anyway, will need to explore other options. Another name frequently mentioned for the Cubs is Mets first baseman Pete Alonso. Zach Pressnell of FanSided suggested Alonso is a more viable target for Chicago than Soto.

“Teams like the Mets and Mariners will be very aggressive in acquiring Alonso,” Pressnell stated. “Chicago needs to be the most proactive in going after him. He would address their biggest gap effectively. It’s a far more realistic option than trying to sign Soto.”

In just six major league seasons, Alonso has hit 226 home runs, ranking second only to Aaron Judge of the Yankees. While he hasn’t been an elite hitter for average, his career stats—around .250 batting average, over .500 slugging percentage, .854 OPS, and .339 on-base percentage—show he offers more than just home runs. Alonso is one of the top power hitters in baseball and would provide the Cubs with the offensive boost they’ve needed for years.

Although he may not be Juan Soto, Alonso could be acquired for significantly less money while still delivering a major impact for Chicago if they can secure him.
