Top JUCO Safety Commits to West Virginia Following Coaching Shake-Up at Kentucky…

West Virginia University has landed a major defensive addition to its 2025 recruiting class as junior college safety Da’Mare Williams announced his commitment to the Mountaineers. The decision comes shortly after the University of Kentucky parted ways with head coach Mark Stoops, prompting Williams to reconsider his earlier pledge to the Wildcats.

Williams, regarded as one of the top JUCO safeties in the nation, made his announcement public on social media late Sunday. “Extremely blessed to be in this position! Morgantown, let’s do it! I’m a Mountaineer. Recruitment shut down,” he wrote, signaling an end to his recruitment process. His change of plans unfolded within hours of reopening his options.

West Virginia had been an early contender in Williams’ recruitment before he initially committed to Kentucky. With the Wildcats facing uncertainty following Stoops’ dismissal, WVU head coach Rich Rodriguez and his staff moved swiftly to reestablish contact and secure the talented defensive back.

Williams drew interest from multiple programs across the country, including Houston and UCF, but ultimately chose the Mountaineers as the best fit for his future. The coaching staff’s renewed pursuit and clear vision for his role in the defense played pivotal factors in his decision.

On the field, Williams brings a strong track record of production. During the 2025 season, he appeared in 10 games, totaling 39 tackles, four pass breakups, two interceptions and two tackles for loss. His physical style and ability to read offenses are expected to strengthen WVU’s secondary immediately upon his arrival.

The Mountaineers continue to build momentum on the recruiting trail as they prepare for the upcoming season. Additional coverage of West Virginia football recruiting developments can be found at WV Sports Now.
