Calvin Johnson Drops Blunt Truth Bomb On Lions
There was no better WR in history of Detroit Lions than Calvin Johnson, widely regarded as one of greatest at position in NFL history — known as Megatron for outrageous athleticism and jaw-dropping highlight catches.
After brief period tension between wideout and organization following retirement (Lions sought $1.6M back from signing bonus after he did not finish contract, relationship “nil”), bridge has since been repaired — regularly returning to Ford Field, spots on Detroit All-Time Team and Ring of Honor.
Recently, Johnson dropped truth bomb on Lions with regard to their pursuit of what would be elusive first Super Bowl title: you can’t do so on a budget, and he used former Lions teammate Matthew Stafford as prime example.
Speaking on Chasing No. 1 podcast guest appearance:
“But the thing I always say, man, I’m not salty about it at all, ’cause I retired like four years before, a couple years before Stafford left Detroit,” Johnson said.
He continued: “The biggest thing for me is that, I used to always say, we tell everybody we got the team here in Detroit. We had the dudes, but you can’t win a Super Bowl on a budget, man. You got to go all in. That’s what you see teams do. They go all in and get that one piece or two pieces that they’re missing, to get them all the way there over the last couple seasons.”
“We had most of pieces there in Detroit. And so for me, when he won Super Bowl, literally the first year after he left Detroit, I’m out there like, ‘I mean, I told y’all what we had.'”
For Johnson, Stafford’s Super Bowl win with Rams in 2021 reinforced what he’d been saying all along — Lions had talent (Johnson rewrote record book, 1,964 yards single season NFL record, six straight 100-yard games), but need to spend big.
Context: Johnson 731 recs 11,619 yds 83 TDs in nine-season run 2007-2015, retired at just 30. NFL Trade Deadline only days away (Nov 10), fans pining for GM Brad Holmes to make move to solidify club position in NFC North standings, especially after victories over Packers and Vikings and in wake of multiple injuries to key players (Jack Campbell neck, Jimmy Rolder IR, Terrion Arnold shoulder).
Message aligns with Lions current window: top-five offense by EPA, Goff MVP-level, Gibbs MVP candidate, but defense needs help.
