Jalen Coker Injury Update Gives Lions Secondary a Much-Needed Break Ahead of Panthers Clash
The Detroit Lions could be getting a significant break ahead of their Week 4 matchup with the Carolina Panthers.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Panthers wide receiver Jalen Coker is unlikely to play in the primetime matchup, potentially removing one of the biggest threats from Carolina’s passing attack.
Coker has developed a strong connection with quarterback Bryce Young and has been an important part of an offense that has been producing through the air. His absence would therefore give Detroit’s secondary one less major weapon to worry about.
The Panthers still have plenty of options available, including rookie receiver Tetairoa McMillan and tight ends Tommy Tremble and Darren Waller. Running back Chuba Hubbard could also create problems for a Lions defense that has struggled to consistently stop the run.
For Detroit, Coker’s expected absence could be particularly helpful as the team continues to work through uncertainty in its secondary.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. could be given increased responsibility after putting together a solid performance against the New York Jets in Week 3. The Lions are also dealing with inconsistent play from other members of the secondary, making the matchup an important opportunity for the younger players.
Lions’ pass rush could decide the game
Even without Coker, the Panthers have enough weapons to make life difficult for Detroit.
That puts added pressure on the Lions’ defensive line to get after Young and prevent him from having too much time in the pocket. Detroit’s pass rush could play a major role in protecting a secondary that has struggled for consistency early in the season.
Carolina will also be without offensive lineman Damien Lewis, while rookie tackle Monroe Freeling is expected to return. Lewis’ absence could give Detroit’s defensive front another opportunity to create pressure.
If the Lions can consistently disrupt Young, their secondary may not have to carry as much of the burden.
Coker’s expected absence is certainly favorable news for Detroit, but the Lions still have plenty of work to do if they want to take advantage of it.
