Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell praised his team’s resilience after the Lions opened their 2026 NFL regular season with a dramatic 31-30 overtime victory over the New Orleans Saints.
Speaking after the game, Campbell credited the Saints for their determination but said his players delivered when the game was on the line. Detroit overcame several momentum swings after building a commanding 21-0 lead before New Orleans mounted a strong comeback.
Campbell highlighted the importance of the Lions’ ability to rely on one another throughout the contest.
The Lions coach praised several standout performances, including wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and running back Jahmyr Gibbs, while also recognizing the contributions of Aidan Hutchinson, Derrick Barnes, Rock Ya-Sin and special teams contributor Tay Martin.
Detroit’s defense proved particularly important, recording three takeaways that were converted into valuable points. Campbell also emphasized the team’s success in slowing down New Orleans’ rushing attack and generating pressure on quarterback Tyler Shough.
Despite the victory, Campbell acknowledged that Detroit’s offense lost some efficiency after its dominant start. The Saints took advantage by finding more rhythm, with Chris Olave becoming increasingly influential as the game progressed.
Campbell said the Lions will need to improve their offensive consistency and tighten up certain defensive assignments, but he dismissed concerns that the secondary’s performance against Shough was a major problem.
“There are things we have to clean up,” Campbell explained, while expressing confidence that both sides of the ball will improve as the season progresses.
Gibbs was another major talking point after handling an increased workload in the season opener. Campbell described the running back’s performance as encouraging and praised his physical condition, saying Gibbs appears to be in excellent shape.
However, Campbell made it clear that Detroit does not intend to focus on setting individual carry records. Instead, the coaching staff will continue monitoring Gibbs’ workload while doing whatever is necessary to give the Lions the best chance of winning.
Campbell also supported New Orleans coach Kellen Moore’s decision to attempt a two-point conversion late in the game, saying he understood the aggressive approach after such a closely contested battle.
On the injury front, Campbell provided cautiously optimistic news regarding offensive lineman Christian Mahogany. An initial scan reportedly came back negative, although the coach said the team was still evaluating a possible hip-related issue.
The Lions coach also discussed his decision to punt late in regulation rather than attempt to convert on fourth down. While he considered being aggressive, Campbell said he trusted his defense after it had regained momentum.
Campbell additionally addressed the reversal of Jared Goff’s sack-fumble, explaining that officials determined the quarterback’s arm was moving forward, resulting in the ruling being overturned.
Ultimately, Campbell viewed the Week 1 victory as an important result despite the mistakes Detroit will need to correct. He stressed that opening-week games can be unpredictable and said the Lions’ primary objective was simply to find a way to win.
With the Saints now behind them, Detroit will quickly turn its attention to its next challenge against Buffalo. Campbell remains confident that the Lions can build on their opening victory and improve as the season progresses.
