West Virginia is making a major move to bolster its coaching staff, securing one of the top running backs coaches in college football. Sources confirm that Rich Rodriguez and the Mountaineers are set to bring in veteran coach Larry Porter to lead their running backs unit.
Porter steps in to replace Chad Scott, who recently accepted the same position at Texas under Steve Sarkisian. Scott’s move comes after the Longhorns lost Tashard Choice to the NFL, creating an opening in Austin that Texas quickly filled. Now, West Virginia is responding with an equally impactful hire.
With an impressive history of player development, Porter has established himself as one of the premier running backs coaches in the country. Most recently, he helped mold Omarion Hampton into a top-tier prospect, with the former UNC star now poised to be one of the most sought-after running backs in this year’s NFL Draft.
Porter’s credentials extend beyond his recent success. A former running back himself at the University of Memphis, he brings decades of experience at the highest levels of college football. His time in the SEC saw him spend a combined nine years coaching running backs at LSU and Auburn, where he played a crucial role in developing elite talent.
His résumé also includes a stint at Texas, where he coached the Longhorns’ running backs for a season. Most recently, he became one of Mack Brown’s most trusted assistants at North Carolina, serving in dual roles as special teams coordinator and running backs coach.
With the Tar Heels undergoing a significant coaching shakeup—headlined by the unprecedented hiring of Bill Belichick to his first collegiate job—Porter became available. West Virginia wasted no time in securing his expertise.
This hire marks another statement move for Rodriguez, who is in the midst of his second tenure leading the Mountaineers. Known for his dynamic offensive schemes, Rodriguez understands the importance of a strong running game, and Porter’s arrival signals a continued commitment to that philosophy.
By bringing in a coach with deep experience in both recruiting and player development, West Virginia is positioning itself for long-term success in the backfield. Porter’s presence should make an immediate impact as the Mountaineers look to compete at the highest level in 2025 and beyond.
