Former PCS Student Found Dead Near Thames Elementary; Investigation Underway

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – Authorities have launched a death investigation following the discovery of a body near Thames Elementary School in Hattiesburg. The incident was confirmed by local law enforcement on Tuesday morning.

Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem identified the deceased as an 18-year-old male. However, the name of the individual has not been released at this time. The coroner’s office is working with investigators to determine the cause of death.

A representative from the Hattiesburg Police Department clarified that the deceased was not a current student at Thames Elementary. Police have also indicated that there is no suspected foul play, and there is no ongoing threat to the surrounding community.

Presbyterian Christian School (PCS) Director of Communications Haylie Taylor issued a statement confirming that the individual was a former PCS student. The school expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss and extended condolences to the affected families. Additionally, PCS has made counseling services available to students, staff, and members of the school community.

“We are heartbroken over the tragic loss of one of our former students this morning, and we ask everyone to be in prayer for our school community and the families involved,” Taylor said. “At this time, we are reminded that our hope is found in Jesus and the promise of eternity, and we are called to care for one another.”

The body was discovered near the intersection of Jamestown Road and Hillendale Drive. Despite the ongoing investigation, normal school operations have continued at Thames Elementary.

Hattiesburg Mayor Toby Barker addressed the situation in a social media statement, urging the community to support those affected. He referenced this incident along with two recent fatal accidents in the city. “Hattiesburg is a family, and we should be intentional in reaching out and supporting those who grieve,” Barker stated. “Be kind to each other.”

An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday morning at the state crime lab in Biloxi. Authorities hope the examination will provide further clarity regarding the cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing.
