The West Virginia Mountaineers have taken another step toward strengthening their defensive line by hosting former LSU defensive lineman Kimo Makane’ole for a visit. Makane’ole, a versatile talent from Niceville, Florida, is a highly sought-after prospect in the transfer portal.
Originally recruited as an offensive lineman, Makane’ole joined LSU over offers from prominent programs such as Florida State, Texas A&M, Pitt, Utah, and Ole Miss. However, after limited opportunities in his first three years in Baton Rouge, he transitioned to defensive tackle during the 2024 offseason. He appeared in nine games this past season, recording one tackle, and now seeks a fresh start with one year of eligibility remaining.
West Virginia’s defensive line depth has been a point of concern, with just three true interior defensive linemencurrently on the roster: Corey McIntyre Jr., Nate Gabriel, and Hammond Russell. While players like Asani Redwood, Edward Vesterinen, Elijah Kinsler, and Makai Byerson can rotate inside, adding a seasoned lineman like Makane’ole would provide much-needed experience and depth to the group.
The Mountaineers have also bolstered their future on the defensive front with the early enrollment of incoming freshman Amir Leonard-Jean Charles, but the team’s immediate needs make Makane’ole a critical target for 2025.
Makane’ole’s pedigree and adaptability, having played both offensive and defensive line in the SEC, could be a valuable asset for West Virginia as they continue to address roster needs through the transfer portal. If he commits, he would bring a unique combination of athleticism and versatility to Morgantown, complementing the team’s young core on the defensive front.
