For more than six decades, Clara Gantt lived with unanswered questions about the fate of her husband, William H. Gantt, a U.S. Army sergeant who went missing during the Korean War in 1950. Sgt. Gantt, a Sergeant First Class in the U.S. Army, was captured by enemy forces during the conflict and was subsequently listed as missing in action, leaving his family uncertain about what had happened to him.
For decades, his fate remained unknown. Military records listed him among thousands of American service members whose remains had never been recovered after the war. While many families eventually received confirmation of their loved ones’ deaths, the Gantt family endured years of silence and uncertainty.

At the age of 94, Clara was able to attend her husband’s burial ceremony with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington. The ceremony marked the first time she had the opportunity to formally say goodbye after more than sixty years of waiting.
