Jalen Reeves-Maybin’s ability to contribute in multiple ways has once again earned him an opportunity on a playoff stage. The former Detroit Lions captain and standout special teams performer has been signed to the Chicago Bears’ active roster as the team prepares for its NFC Divisional Round matchup against the Los Angeles Rams.
Reeves-Maybin, who also serves as president of the NFL Players Association, had been on Chicago’s practice squad before being elevated following a series of roster moves announced Tuesday. Linebacker T.J. Edwards was placed on injured reserve, prompting the Bears to sign Reeves-Maybin, a natural linebacker, to the active roster.
The 30-year-old reunited with former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson—now Chicago’s head coach—when he joined the Bears’ practice squad on Nov. 18. He contributed regularly on special teams during Weeks 13 through 15, though he remained on the practice squad for the final three games of the regular season.
Reeves-Maybin was elevated for Chicago’s Wild Card victory over the Green Bay Packers and delivered his most extensive performance of the season, logging 28 snaps, including eight on defense. He made a key stop in the second quarter, breaking up a third-and-one rushing attempt for no gain.
With injuries at linebacker and his strong postseason showing, Reeves-Maybin is positioned to play a larger role as the Bears host the Rams with a berth in the NFC Championship Game at stake.
Originally selected by Detroit in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft out of Tennessee, Reeves-Maybin spent seven of his first eight NFL seasons with the Lions before a brief stint with the Houston Texans in 2022.
