Texas Tech is being linked to a marquee quarterback in the transfer portal as the Red Raiders begin preparing for life beyond the 2025 season. Even with a College Football Playoff appearance ahead, the program is already evaluating long-term options at the most important position.
The Red Raiders are coming off an emphatic 34–7 win over BYU in the Big 12 Championship Game, earning the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye in the CFP. Texas Tech will face either James Madison or Oregon in the Orange Bowl as it continues its push for the first national title in school history.
Despite the postseason focus, quarterback Behren Morton’s timeline has drawn attention. Morton is expected to exhaust his eligibility in 2025, and ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller currently projects him as a fifth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, signaling a potential transition at quarterback soon after next season.
With the transfer portal opening Jan. 2 and more than 800 players expected to enter, Texas Tech could once again turn to the portal to address the position. According to On3, Cincinnati quarterback Brendan Sorsby has quickly surfaced as a name to watch in connection with the Red Raiders.
On3’s Pete Nakos reported that Texas Tech is an early program to monitor in Sorsby’s recruitment, citing his experience and production. Nakos also noted that Sorsby may weigh an NFL Draft decision, with Indiana and Tennessee among the other schools keeping tabs on him.
Sorsby put together a strong season, completing 207 of 336 passes for 2,800 yards, 27 touchdowns, and five interceptions, while posting a 155.1 passer rating. He also made an impact on the ground, rushing for 580 yards and nine touchdowns on 100 carries.
One of the top players expected to hit the portal, Sorsby is ranked third overall by Rivals. His On3 NIL valuation sits at $2.4 million, tied for the 10th-highest in college football. That figure may not deter Texas Tech, which assembled the nation’s top transfer class in 2025 with an adjusted NIL valuation of $7.6 million after adding 21 newcomers.
As the portal window nears, Texas Tech’s quarterback plans will be closely watched. With Morton entering his final season, the Red Raiders appear positioned to pursue a high-level replacement. Texas Tech will play in the Orange Bowl at noon ET on Jan. 1, televised on ESPN and available on the ESPN app.
